Week 13: Bringing the Old into the New

Big transformations took place this week that has turned this house into a functioning home. To start off the hardwood floors have been refinished throughout the first floor and the quarter round has been set in place. These floors look absolutely amazing! Even though they had been covered with carpet for all this time there were still all kinds of character marks from the past 60+ years. Not to mention the mess we have made over the past 13 weeks of mud, paint, drywall, tile grout and who knows what else. They look brand spanking new and couldn't be more pleased with the end product so if you need a guy let me know.  Now that the floors are complete we can start the clean up phase, we have so been looking forward to this phase of the remodel. Well not really because typically people do not enjoy doing the deep cleaning like cleaning windows or baseboards but thankfully I married the world's greatest cleaner.  Seriously. My husband kept our house spic and span during the remodeling constantly sweeping and vacuuming the day's mess. Our garage is spotless and it is currently housing all of our trash, old appliances,  tools, doors and wood trims left over from the demo. So our Saturday & Sunday was spent fall cleaning so we can get moved in this space. We are having the HVAC professionally cleaned out as well to get rid of all the dust and chemical smells of paint and polyurethane.

Our electrician finished up his work this week too. All of our outlets were updated to a 3-prong plug and all if the switches were updated,  dimmers for the kitchen and entry way. All of our new recessed ceiling lights were cut and hung and finished with a white trim. I started putting up all of the new plate covers. I went with the standard plastic plates, white in the medium size. I actually didn't know that covers came in S, M & L options but it makes sense and glad I did because my painter doesn't need to come back and touch up around the outlets and switches. The larger size also looks a bit grander giving a more expensive look but not expensive to the wallet.

I also decided to replace all of the door knobs on the first floor. Since we got all new exterior doors that came with new hardware my OCD in me said they all need to match. So my dad taught me how to remove and put on the new knobs. We did both types, hall & closet and bed & bath (these are the locking ones). I went with rounded knobs in Satin Nickel finish. Majority of them fit just fine but others we had to trim out some of the door to make work. Note to self when replacing door knobs: make sure you look at what you have existing.  The flat plates where the door latches on can come in a variety of sizes and shapes.  All of our doors were rectangles with square edges.  Of course the knobs I picked out were rectangle with rounded edges meaning the plate didn't fit right in the cut so the latch wouldn't properly catch. So in these situation we used a small saw to cut out a little of the door to make the latch fit.

With the help of our electrician Matt and I hooked up the microwave, range and stacking washer dryer. We actually have appliances that we can use! We ran a couple loads and popped some popcorn to make sure all was in working order.

Hall Bath: The hardware is complete in here just need to find a perfect mirror to hang. I am trying to find a specific size so it can fit nicely over the bead board, more difficult than I thought. I love love love how the colors turned out in here!

Master Bedroom: We hung a new ceiling fan in here and Matt actually picked it out all by himself. I instructed him to find an all white fan and light combo that sits close to the ceiling. I was impressed when he came home with his buy.


 
Master Bath: The mirror, shelving and hardware was hung and new knobs put on the existing built in. I have a couple more shelves and towel rings and hooks to hang I just haven't decided which pieces I want to use, don't want it to be to over crowded in there. Just waiting for the shower door to complete.

This week was a special one for Matt and I as we got to celebrate our one year anniversary in our new home. We couldn't have asked for a better gift than that. Here's to the next 50 here on Heady Avenue!

This coming week we have a big line up coming in: Monday - HVAC system cleaned out, Tuesday - carpeting the stairs and bedroom closets, Wednesday - granite install and Thursday - master shower door install. This is all leading up to the moving trucks set for the weekend! It is so surreal thinking that we are finally able to be full time living in our forever home :)

P.S. Oscar seems to be enjoying it too..... Such a hard worker.

#DEMODAY Phase II

Yes #demoday Phase II because like I mentioned we are basically building a new house. After the back was torn down and cleaned up a mini digger was brought in to build out our trenches where the new foundation was going to be poured. The existing slab of concrete where the breezeway and garage sat was kept since the new foot print was larger and it wasn't going to interfere (there was a small part of me that was going to miss the black & red tile floor). Also it was helpful that the team was working on that vs dirt and rock. Trenches were dug so concrete could be poured for the foundation and footers. During the design phase Matt and I went round and round on whether the new addition floor should be the same height as the existing or if we should do a sunken great room. There were benefits to each, mainly a sunken great room would allow for a higher ceiling height and potential for vaulted ceilings. Well We Did It Again....

Ooops we did it again! Most were calling us crazy but we found another project. The days of watching our kids walk to school are here. Being  able to give them the opportunity to grow up in a neighborhood where their fellow classmates (and lots of family!) are a bike ride way is something special. The next few chapters in our family's life will revolve around meeting new friends, school events & activities and we want to be present for it all!  Rewind almost a year Ago........... This house came into our lap literally out of nowhere thanks to our realtor Jon. We knew we were "looking" for the next but wouldn't say we were hard core house hunting. Week 5: All the Guts & Glory

WEEK 5: All the Guts & Glory So this week started and I have to admit that I wasn't too thrilled for the work's line up. However today I learned it is the little things in the life that give the best surprises! Week 5 was all about the roofing, plumbing, electrical & mechanics. Not fun stuff but oh the most important. You have got to get all the guts working right and most efficient so your house can stand the test of time. Exterior: Thankfully the exterior of the house and the yard was in fairly decent shape. The landscaping was kept up and the windows were new. And even better the roof was in good shape too, a few pop ups that needed some fixing but all in all it was good. We knew from our inspection that the attic needed some new vents and some more insulation because it was hotter than hell up there. My brother Eric and cousin Jon Michael with Joseph S.
