Week 17: Getting Settled, Little by Little

Little by little yes we are starting to get settled in to our new home. Furniture is being bought, frames are being hung, décor being placed around. Yes we are finally starting to get some personalization to this place!

Knotty Pine Room
So this room has turned somewhat into a little family room or den. We figure that down the road when this place starts to fill up we are going to spend majority of our time in these 3 areas, kitchen, dining and family room. We had the TV wall mounted and filled the shelves with all of our fondest memories. Shelving placement is one tricky thing to do. I could probably rearrange these shelves over and over and over again. My main goal is trying to keep it all visually balanced. I decided to take out a shelf from each side to break it up a bit. I removed  them at different heights so it creates a more asymmetrical balance effect. This also allows you to put larger and taller items, not just having it all look so mono-tone shelf on top of shelf. Another tip is to alternate what you are putting up. If the bottom shelf is lined with books the next one should house something different, like picture frames or candles. Take the same idea to the shelves on the other side. You don't want to have the same things lined the same way so if the left side has books on the bottom make sure you put another décor on the bottom side of the right side. I also try to keep things in odd numbers, 3 or 5 of something gives a better visual look. This is just my take on built in shelving and like I said you could rearrange and rearrange forever. When you finish let it be and take a step back and see what it looks like from different sight views, you can easily see from a distance if something looks uneven, bare or too full.

I need to find some seating for in here. I am thinking of either a small sectional or a couple comfy chairs with a small area rug to create a more intimate sitting area. Whatever I do find the most important factor is that it needs to be able to be rearranged fairly easy so when we entertain we can move them around to keep a good walkway or to be able to set a card table and chairs if we are having people over for a meal.

Before: Over load of Knotty Pine (and Matt giving me some kind of questionable look I am sure while I am discussing my plans haha)

After: Open and freshly painted, looking from the kitchen on

Before: Opening up the 3 spaces, looking on from the back/garage door

After: One large open space with visual boundaries dividing the areas, looking on from the back/garage door

After: looking from the built ins

Dining Room
This room now serves as an eat in kitchen vs. a formal dining room since opening up the space. I found a great wrought iron light fixture to go with the new kitchen table I had made. It has a nice rustic feel to it so it keeps it casual. The table we absolutely love and it is the perfect size. I was having such a hard time trying to find a narrow rectangle table so I bit the bullet and had one custom built. Reasonable price and fast turnaround if you are looking for one. We also are having a matching bench built for one side and then will get new chairs to put on the other side and at the ends.

I also picked out of the fabric for the window treatments and are having those made as well. I am going with a pinch pleat to the floor curtains to dress it up. Although the table and light are casual a nice window treatment still will give a bit of a formal feel but not too formal. I am also wanting to have corner built in cabinets made that will store my china and display some of it too. This element will go along with the curtains giving a nice balance of casual and formal. And of course one can never have too much storage.

Before: Out dated formal dining room

After: Open eat in kitchen area

Living Room
This room didn't get anything structurally done, just some cosmetics. New paint, refinished floors and a new mantel top. We had the new TV wall mounted and all of the furniture in here is from are old house that surprisingly fit pretty well. We want to get a sectional to better fit and get the most out of the space, a new large area rug to make it more cozy (and to absorb noise) and also hang curtains in here too. Since I am not sure of the fabric of the new sofa yet I am hesitant on picking our fabric for the windows. One day I would love to have some plantation shutters here, who knows maybe I will just do both. Again little by little it is all coming together!

 Before: Out dated Living room

 After: Warm and inviting

Before: Looking on from the living room to the knotty pine, dark and closed in

 After: All spaces flowing together

I cant say thanks enough for all of the kind complements and words of encouragement from all of you guys. It has been such a fun road and we are loving putting all of the little pieces together!

Hello and welcome to our Blog! I decided to create this to document and share our journey of purchasing and remodeling our first home. Matt and I were married on October 6, 2012 and became proud owners of our forever home on July 8, 2013. Our brick ranch sits on a corner lot of a beautiful tree lined street housing 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, living, kitchen, dining, family, finished walkout basement and two car garage. This marked all of the checks on our list and has room to grow for many years to come, we still pinch ourselves. A special shout-out to our realtor Jonathan Hayes, who made this place ours. The house was built in the 1950s and hasn't seen much of any major remodels or updates since then. It has however been well cared for and loved by a great family since the 80s who had a hard time saying good bye to it. We actually had to call them on day 1 to figure out how to unlock the garage man-door :) They came no questions asked to give a helping hand and are ex...

Week 12: Kitchen Dream Come True

Hello everyone and welcome to the 12th week here on Heady Avenue.  It is hard to believe we have been working on our house for just about 3 months. Technically October the 8th will be three months to the day since becoming new home owners. We have accomplished quite a bit in a short amount of time and honestly still wonder how we made it all happen. Of course with the help and support of our parents and other family members this dream became a reality.  And this week all of our wildest dreams came true. It was an emotional week which might seem a bit silly but it truly really was.  Bright and early on Thursday morning Christmas came about 3 months early for us. At the crack of dawn two large trucks pulled in our driveway and started on the most important room in the house: our kitchen.  Of course this is where the main part of the demo took place (and majority of the budget) so to be able to walk in the door and see actual parts of a finished room was breathta...

All of the Blood, Sweat & Tears

Literally. Blood, Sweat and Tears. All of that and so much more went into this rather large journey of ours. And it was worth every single second. All of the late nights and early mornings, the long weekends full of work and no play, all the band aids and ibuprofen, the trips to and from & back again to Home Depot and Lowes, the laughs, the arguments the tears. It was all so worth it. The time, patience and talent we gave to this makes every inch of our new home so special. There is a story to tell about the floors and walls, plumbing pipes and vents, lighting fixtures, bath tubs and toilets. You name it we did it. And it all would not have been possible without our family. Thank you to Matt's Grandpa for lending his knowledge and expertise throughout each phase of the remodel. Thank you to our parents for their continuous support and helping hand and a place for us to live during it all. They too all endured the blood, sweat and tears and without their help there is no way Mat...
