#DEMODAY Phase 1

Everybody loves a good #DEMODAY

Thankfully we were able to start our timeline of work while still living in the house. The longer we could stay the better. We were also extremely grateful for my parents letting us bunk up with them for the renovation, it is a HUGE blessing. Thanks Mom & Dad! October 15th was the start of this journey. The timeline had the demolition and removal of the breezeway and single car garage. Once that was removed the new foundations and footers could be poured for the footprint of the addition. The yard would be graded out and the framing of the addition would begin.

Technically our first demo was the removal of a tree in the front yard. We did this in the Summer. A very large, old tree that happened to be right in the middle on the front door walkway. It was old and on its way down and wasn't going to take the chance of it ever falling. And of course it completely blocked the front facade of the house. Our plans included adding in some architectural character to the front so wanted to make sure it could been showcased.

So Back to the fun stuff.... we got kicked out of the house in early November. When we moved in the summer we only brought the bare minimum, our beds and clothes not even a kitchen table! The rest we took to a storage unit. So moving out was pretty painless but lets face it moving is NEVER fun! We did leave a handful of boxes in the basement and most of our garage stuff we packed in our shed in the backyard. My parents again being lifesavers, we have stuff scattered everywhere at their house too. You don't really realize how much crap you accumulate in such a short amount of time until you literally have to pack it all away. Matt and I keep saying there is no way we are moving all this back in the new house LOL. But seriously we will be having a nice yard sale towards the end of this! That honestly has been the hardest part. Living in this limbo of where everything is. Matt and I being as organized as we are ;) this for sure has been a challenge. Just keep telling ourselves "its all worth it"

Once we were cleared out our contractor didn't waste a minute opening up the back of the house. Matt and I honestly thought some big ol wrecking ball would come in and smash the back of the house down. We were so wrong! It was a delicate process. The electrician came first and disconnected all power to the breezeway and garage. Then the demo crew came and actually removed the structure piece by piece, it really was a true art. These pictures do not do them any justice of the work they did. Nail by nail, board by board everything was taken down and gone to the first of MANY dumpsters. I don't think we kept anything from this tear down, nothing of anything was all that salvageable.

After the back of the house came off we started to realize this wasn't just a remodel. We were basically building a brand new house. Let the fun begin!!

Week 13: Bringing the Old into the New

Big transformations took place this week that has turned this house into a functioning home. To start off the hardwood floors have been refinished throughout the first floor and the quarter round has been set in place. These floors look absolutely amazing! Even though they had been covered with carpet for all this time there were still all kinds of character marks from the past 60+ years. Not to mention the mess we have made over the past 13 weeks of mud, paint, drywall, tile grout and who knows what else. They look brand spanking new and couldn't be more pleased with the end product so if you need a guy let me know.  Now that the floors are complete we can start the clean up phase, we have so been looking forward to this phase of the remodel. Well not really because typically people do not enjoy doing the deep cleaning like cleaning windows or baseboards but thankfully I married the world's greatest cleaner.  Seriously. My husband kept our house spic and span during the ...

Week 2: Demo Begins

The framers are here! The framers are here! And boy were the fast. Lonnie and his team took two and a half days for this to happen. Never thought it would be that quick! They did a fantastic job and also learned that he has done work on a few other houses in the neighborhood. Apparently in the 50s and 60s Homerama took place here. Mud/Entry: The wall separating this room from the kitchen and dining room was removed, since it was load bearing we had to install a 14' LVL beam for the proper support. Some people do not like to have this installed when going for an open concept because your ceilings will not be one continuous plane. In our case we are leaving the parallel wall that separates the kitchen/dining and living room which is also load bearing so it is going to match up making it look as if the house was originally built that way.  Before   Before: The Beautiful Knotty Pine Room    After     After   They s...

Week 7: Getting So Close....

WEEK 7: Getting So Close.... The good news for this week of work is that we have walls... the bad news is they just aren't put up yet. All of the new material got delivered on Friday so Randy and his crew are set to start first thing Monday morning. YEAH!! They are scheduled to be done in a few days. SO take all of the mental pictures you can in your head because this will be the last time you get to see the house all torn up!  This week things have really started to come together and you can start to actually see somewhat of a house again. We have started to be able to remove of the 'junk' laying around the house, like tools, boxes, things we need during the demo phase. I always say an organized home is a happy home.   Stacks of 8' sheets   Stacks of 12' sheets I spent my time this week covering our hardwood floors with cardboard to keep them protected while the guys drywall. If any drywall mug gets dropped on the floors you have to go back and scrap...
