Week 10: Color Color Color!

Week 10 sure sounds like a long time. I can't believe 10 weeks have already gone by since starting this new adventure. It seems like just yesterday we were getting the keys, I think my sanity would beg to differ, but it sure has been a fun yet challenging ride so far. This week was another tough one, nothing that Matt and I couldn't handle, just some seed bumps to get over. We had to re tile the master shower door because it wasn't right, the knotty pine room got painted the wrong color (even with what I thought was a full proof plan), we discovered we are going to have to purchase new base boards for majority of the first floor, you know random things like that. So the week started off on a high dropped low about mid week then rose back to the top again.

This week the tiling job finished, painting continued, lighting &electrics continued and trim work started. The third and final dumpster was picked up so now we can use our garage as staging and work area to get stuff cleared out of the house to start getting it cleaned up. Matt and I spent our Friday night organizing the garage, some Friday night huh? But honestly there is nothing more rewarding, day in and day out of giving this project our all and starting to see end projects,  its priceless.

I am not sure what I am more excited about, the fact the we have color on our walls or that that the kitchen and knotty pine room has a finished floor. It is amazing to walk in the door on to a beautiful brand new, evenly height floor. The tile is amazing and the colors in it go perfectly with the paint colors. I couldn't be more happy with the finished product. Actually now that I am physically typing the best part of this week and is less writing and more pictures. It has finally gotten to the point where the pics do all if the talking. Things are really coming along!

Kitchen/Knotty Pine Room:The floors are finally finished in here woohoo! The large tiles really open up the space and help the 2 rooms flow together.  I chose to paint the same color in these rooms and continue it through out the first floor to keep with the open floor plan. The kitchen cabinets go from floor to ceiling so there really aren't much of kitchen walls so I kept it all the same. The color is Pavilion Beige from Sherwin Williams and I love it because it has a nice mix of grey and brown to pull together the original hard wood floors with our more modern kitchen cabinets. Which get installed on the 26th!

Dining Room: This room hasn't much changed since the original demo but my goal here was to have a more formal eat in kitchen since I don't have a formal dining room. My navy blue accent wall really dresses up the space and gives a nice visual boundary. The color is Naval from Sherwin Williams. I did lose my beloved ceiling medallion but plan to add in 2 corner cabinets to store and display lots of our beautiful wedding presents and china.

Living Room: This room got the same paint as the kitchen, Pavilion Beige. All has stayed the same here since the demo.

Entry/Hallway: The trim work started here to put up the finished counter, molding and wainscoting. The half wall is being painted a creamy white, Sherwin Williams Westhighland White to off set from the Pavilion Beige hallways. I wanted it to be a statement piece since we didn't do any fancy wrought iron rails. I also painted the staircase wall and down the stairs in Sherwin Williams Functional Gray, this color will continue through out the basement when we get to finishing that.

Hall Bath: The bead board is installed and now the trimmers are adding the floor baseboards and then will get a fresh coat of Extra White paint. The walls in here are Sherwin Williams Cupola Yellow. It is a soft gold tone that will compliment the Oil rubbed Bronze finishes and dark Walnut vanity. Yellow is also complimentary to the Navy Blue accent colors in the kitchen and dining area. I will be using gold's, oranges and corals in the Living and Knotty Pine so it should tie all nicely together.

Bedroom 1: Paint in here is SW Sea Salt. I love this color because it looks different in every shad of light. Depending on how the light hits it looks gray, blue and soft green tones. You can pair just about any finish of furniture whether it is white or mahogany and it could go from a shabby chic beachy to a glam feel with a stainless steel mirror look. The new closet door was hung and the baseboards, door and window casing are going back up those being painted Extra White.

Master: Now this room has really gotten the full makeover and we are loving it. The color I chose in here is SW Olympus White, although it doesn't seem so white to me. It has a soft blue undertone which will give a relaxing feel to it. Our furniture is a dark finish with grayish marble tops pairing with white lines creating a nice little oasis to go to after all this hard work we are putting into our new home.

Master Bath: This got the full remodel as well and went with the same paint as the bedroom, Olympus White. I went with all chrome finishes in here to dress it up a bit. Chrome does show finger prints more than any other type of finish but since it is just Matt and I using this I am not as concerned with it. The door/threshold of the shower had to get a couple re-tiles to match up right with the new drywall but the third time was a charm. Next up a frame less glass door.

So as you can see it really is starting to look like an actual house. The painting continues and when that is wrapped up we can finish the hard wood floors. And did I mention that are cabinets get installed next week?!? Those were a big ticket item so Matt and I are really excited to see these in the flesh.

Well We Did It Again....

Ooops we did it again! Most were calling us crazy but we found another project. The days of watching our kids walk to school are here. Being  able to give them the opportunity to grow up in a neighborhood where their fellow classmates (and lots of family!) are a bike ride way is something special. The next few chapters in our family's life will revolve around meeting new friends, school events & activities and we want to be present for it all!  Rewind almost a year Ago........... This house came into our lap literally out of nowhere thanks to our realtor Jon. We knew we were "looking" for the next but wouldn't say we were hard core house hunting. Maybe Matt and Jon were but I wasn't ready, at least not with a 6 month old at home. Matt was persistent on moving and a phone call from Jon led to an immediate walk through that evening and we knew we couldn't pass this one up. We made an offer that night even though they had anot...

All of the Blood, Sweat & Tears

Literally. Blood, Sweat and Tears. All of that and so much more went into this rather large journey of ours. And it was worth every single second. All of the late nights and early mornings, the long weekends full of work and no play, all the band aids and ibuprofen, the trips to and from & back again to Home Depot and Lowes, the laughs, the arguments the tears. It was all so worth it. The time, patience and talent we gave to this makes every inch of our new home so special. There is a story to tell about the floors and walls, plumbing pipes and vents, lighting fixtures, bath tubs and toilets. You name it we did it. And it all would not have been possible without our family. Thank you to Matt's Grandpa for lending his knowledge and expertise throughout each phase of the remodel. Thank you to our parents for their continuous support and helping hand and a place for us to live during it all. They too all endured the blood, sweat and tears and without their help there is no way Mat...

Week 2: Demo Begins

The framers are here! The framers are here! And boy were the fast. Lonnie and his team took two and a half days for this to happen. Never thought it would be that quick! They did a fantastic job and also learned that he has done work on a few other houses in the neighborhood. Apparently in the 50s and 60s Homerama took place here. Mud/Entry: The wall separating this room from the kitchen and dining room was removed, since it was load bearing we had to install a 14' LVL beam for the proper support. Some people do not like to have this installed when going for an open concept because your ceilings will not be one continuous plane. In our case we are leaving the parallel wall that separates the kitchen/dining and living room which is also load bearing so it is going to match up making it look as if the house was originally built that way.  Before   Before: The Beautiful Knotty Pine Room    After     After   They s...
