Week 12: Kitchen Dream Come True

Hello everyone and welcome to the 12th week here on Heady Avenue.  It is hard to believe we have been working on our house for just about 3 months. Technically October the 8th will be three months to the day since becoming new home owners. We have accomplished quite a bit in a short amount of time and honestly still wonder how we made it all happen. Of course with the help and support of our parents and other family members this dream became a reality.  And this week all of our wildest dreams came true. It was an emotional week which might seem a bit silly but it truly really was.  Bright and early on Thursday morning Christmas came about 3 months early for us.

At the crack of dawn two large trucks pulled in our driveway and started on the most important room in the house: our kitchen.  Of course this is where the main part of the demo took place (and majority of the budget) so to be able to walk in the door and see actual parts of a finished room was breathtaking. Two walls blown out, a new LVL beam installed, new lighting, new routed plumbing,  new floor,  new walls and ceilings along with many other small detailed items the first floor now has a new purpose. We went with Chris' Custom Cabinets and could not have been more impressed with the quality of product, work and service. Super nice crew that were friendly and put up with me when I had them keep moving the island one inch to the left then back to the right an inch to have the exact placement i wanted. They arrived on time and worked till it was done. I would highly recommend anyone to check them out!

I had been there all day with the crew so I got to first hand witness this dream and I kept texting Matt telling him how beautiful they were but didn't want to send any pictures, he had to wait to see it in person. So later on that night he pulled in the driveway and starting making his way through the door, it opened and he just kind of froze. It was a picture that I will always have in my head. Pure joy and excitement mixed with a a few moments of amazed silence.  And for anyone who knows Matt, pure silence doesn't come very often.

Kitchen: painting was complete and cabinets are hung. Our ceiling on one corner slopes up so in order for the crown molding to fit and work properly the crew had to lower the cabinet doors on the pantry and above the fridge. Its always something right? This allows for more spacing at the top of the cabinets and ceiling line for our 3" molding. They will complete this when they return to finish trimming out once the granite is set.

I am most excited about my cabinet roll out drawers. I put them in the pantry and two of the base cabinets, defiantly worth every penny of the upgraded cost.

Knotty Pine Room: The built in shelving got finished with the painting and we decided to go ahead and take out the middle section so it can serve as an entertainment center. Are main TV is going over the mantel in the living room so we were going to use this area as more of a mud room/office/computer room. However we soon came to realize that it made since to put another TV here so we had our trim man take out the center post. We are going to add a new top counter on the base cabinets, kind of like how we did for the mantel, make it a little bit deeper and add some molding details to dress it up.

After: Knotty Pine built ins. Painted the background in the SW Naval

Hall Bath: The new vanity and faucet was put in place so this room is fully functioning.  The mirror and towel bars will get hung this coming week.

Master Bath: The new vanity and faucet was put in and will put up the mirror and towel bars will get hung this week too.

Our hardwood floors also started in their makeover this week to. The original floors were in hood condition,  mainly since they were covered the majority of their life span. The floor crew came in and sanded down as much as could and worked out any worn areas. They then applied a new stain and polyurethane to finish the look. Of course they aren't going yo be able the buff out all nicks and scratches but in my eyes they are just character marks in a pretty old house. We had the master bedroom done first to be sure we were pleased with the outcome, of course they turned out beautiful. The stain is just dark enough for what I was as envisioning, a bit darker and warmer than the existing honey color tone, but not dark enough where it will shown all kinds of dirt. We do have Oscar so we know he is going to put a beating on them.

Mater Bedroom: Refinished hard wood floors. Still need to add the shoe mold, trim that connects the floor and the baseboard, which comes last after finishing all the floors.

 After: Refinished hardwood floors

This week the remainder of the hardwood will get done as well as wrapping up both bathrooms and the template for the kitchen granite will be measured so it can be cut exactly as the cabinets were installed. Our painter Juan is also going to start on the exterior of the house painting the doors, wrought iron banisters and underside of the roof overhang. We are continuing to run full steam ahead and have an anticipated move in in the next week or two and couldn't be more thrilled!

#DEMODAY Phase II

Yes #demoday Phase II because like I mentioned we are basically building a new house. After the back was torn down and cleaned up a mini digger was brought in to build out our trenches where the new foundation was going to be poured. The existing slab of concrete where the breezeway and garage sat was kept since the new foot print was larger and it wasn't going to interfere (there was a small part of me that was going to miss the black & red tile floor). Also it was helpful that the team was working on that vs dirt and rock. Trenches were dug so concrete could be poured for the foundation and footers. During the design phase Matt and I went round and round on whether the new addition floor should be the same height as the existing or if we should do a sunken great room. There were benefits to each, mainly a sunken great room would allow for a higher ceiling height and potential for vaulted ceilings. We ultimately decided the entire first floor should be on the same walki...

Well We Did It Again....

Ooops we did it again! Most were calling us crazy but we found another project. The days of watching our kids walk to school are here. Being  able to give them the opportunity to grow up in a neighborhood where their fellow classmates (and lots of family!) are a bike ride way is something special. The next few chapters in our family's life will revolve around meeting new friends, school events & activities and we want to be present for it all!  Rewind almost a year Ago........... This house came into our lap literally out of nowhere thanks to our realtor Jon. We knew we were "looking" for the next but wouldn't say we were hard core house hunting. Maybe Matt and Jon were but I wasn't ready, at least not with a 6 month old at home. Matt was persistent on moving and a phone call from Jon led to an immediate walk through that evening and we knew we couldn't pass this one up. We made an offer that night even though they had anot...
Hello and welcome to our Blog! I decided to create this to document and share our journey of purchasing and remodeling our first home. Matt and I were married on October 6, 2012 and became proud owners of our forever home on July 8, 2013. Our brick ranch sits on a corner lot of a beautiful tree lined street housing 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, living, kitchen, dining, family, finished walkout basement and two car garage. This marked all of the checks on our list and has room to grow for many years to come, we still pinch ourselves. A special shout-out to our realtor Jonathan Hayes, who made this place ours. The house was built in the 1950s and hasn't seen much of any major remodels or updates since then. It has however been well cared for and loved by a great family since the 80s who had a hard time saying good bye to it. We actually had to call them on day 1 to figure out how to unlock the garage man-door :) They came no questions asked to give a helping hand and are ex...
